WELCOME TO MAE HONG SON

Come and discover this quiet province located in the north-west of Thailand next to the Burma border. With its rolling mountains and lush vegetation, including pines on the upper slopes, Mae Hong Son has been called a mini-Switzerland.

Only a few visitors venture this far. Those who do usually head for Pai, a small valley town that has become a haven for musicians and other artists in recent years. Other places worth a visit include the provincial capital* with its Burmese-style style temples and Mae Sariang near Salawin National Park.

Mae Hong Son is most easily reached from Chiang Mai. The options are by plane to Pai or Mae Hong Son, by tourist minibus to Pai, local bus throughout the province or rented car.
If choosing the last option, we recommend taking a driver - the steep hills and curves are not only demanding and tiring, but prevent you from seeing the scenery and spectacular views. On the way, don't forget to see the spectacular Nam Lod caves.

Mae Hong Son is also a trekking centre, with many trails leading up into the mountains and stopping at hilltribe villages, including Karen, Lisu, Hmong and Shan.
