Ever watched muay thai? Thai kickboxing is a faster sport than Western boxing,
equally thrill-laden and steeped in tradition.
Fighters perform an elaborate prayer in the ring before the bout begins, wearing a traditional headdress and
garland. During the fight, a group of musicians play traditional Thai music. In the fight itself, hands, elbows, knees and
feet can be used to strike any part of the oppponent's body except the genitals.
There are five three minute rounds. The first round usually sees the pair assessing each other and the bout becomes
fiercer in subsequent rounds. The winner is chosen by three judges but there is little triumphalism. If the fight ends
with a knockout, the winner invariably seeks from both his opponent and his trainer.

Around the ring the crowds cheer the fighters. Although illegal, everyone is gambling, and small fortunes may be won or lost...

The Bangkok Boxing Stadium - a new muay thai venue - has opened in Tiamruammit Road near the Thailand Cultural Centre.
Fights begin in front of a packed stadium every Saturday at 2.30 pm; the usual pattern is three professional fights, one women's bout and two upcoming / amateur fights.
If you buy at the door, tickets are normally 1,500 baht. Book in advance from
Kinnara
and pay only 1,100 baht. (Fights Saturday afternoons only.)
Luxury transport to and from the stadium, together with the opportunity to meet and photograph fighters
is available for an additional 2,500 baht per group of one to six people.
