PHUKET

An island overlooking the Andaman Sea on the southern arm of Thailand, Phuket has grown rapidly in popularity in the past twenty years.

Spend a week getting to know the ins and outs of the island, from the brash bars and restaurants of Patong to the old Chinese-Portuguese houses of Phuket town, from the quieter beaches of Nai Han to the forest reserve of Khao Phra Taew.

Go snorkeling and learn to scuba-dive near one of the many islands in Phang-Nga Bay.

See the weird formations of James Bond island.

See a show - the fantastic Fantasea or camp Simon Cabaret .

Go sea-kayaking into the mysterious heart of islands hidden from the outside world.

Try the seafood at one of hundreds of restaurants, from street market stalls to five-star luxury.

Go souvenir shopping in one of the island's many shops, markets and malls.

Venture further afield, to the magical rain forest of Khao Sok National Park, or the quieter seaside provinces of Krabi, Trang and Satun.

MEET THE BABY
Kinnara adopts wild gibbon

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket was established in 1992. It is a research arm of the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand.
The Project's goal is to save gibbons and their rainforest habitat through rehabilitation and education. It is based at Bang Pae Waterfall in a national park in the centre of Phuket.

A key component of its work is returning to the wild gibbons that have been illegally captured and sold as pets or as "tourist attractions" in bars. Because of poor care and disease, up to ten times as many gibbons die in captivity as survive.

The GRP, a non-profit organisation, asks individuals and companies to sponsor gibbons that are being returned to the wild, a process that can take several years. In April K
innara adopted Songkhran (the name of the Thai New Year, which is celebrated in April), a four-year old male who currently lives with a female of similar age. As they reach maturity, around the age of six, it is hoped it will be possible to release them into the wild. We will keep you informed of Songkhran's progress.

Human contact with gibbons which are being rehabilitated is not allowed, but we hope that won't stop you visiting the Project and supporting its work. Take a private half-day tour to Bang Pae for 1,500 baht.

GOOD FOOD
new restaurant

On a visit to Phuket in April, Kinnara discovered the newly opened Thai by nature in a soi off Bangla Road in Patong.

Classic Thai cuisine in a quiet minimalist setting - a great place to take a loved one or friends for a relaxing evening. Highly recommended.
