In the evenings enjoy a leisurely gourmet dinner or dance the night away in a trendy nightclub in RCA, Silom or Sukhumvit. Spend a day at the beach in nearby Pattaya or in the old capital of Ayutthaya.
Fly north to Chiang Mai, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lanna. Chill out for a few days in the quiet temples, or learning massage or Thai cooking. Take a trek through the forest, ride an elephant and drift down a river on a bamboo raft. Learn the history of opium in the Golden Triangle. Escape the crowds in Nan and Phrae.
Then head south for the beaches. Start with Phuket, the centre of southern tourism, then seek out quieter provinces, such as Krabi, Trang and Satun. Or explore the south-eastern coast, Trat and Koh Chang. While topping up your tan, sail, snorkel and learn to scuba-dive.
Finally, seek out forgotten Isaan, the country's north-eastern plateau, littered with Khmer temples from the time of Angkor Wat. Experience the different culture here - language, dance and music - and take a side-trip to neighboring Laos and Cambodia.
